Intake of high caffeine levels is linked to the weight gain in childhood, suggested a study published in the online journal BMJ Open. The study suggested the limiting intake of caffeine during pregnancy. It argues over pregnant ladies should consume it or not. Caffeine passes through tissues such as placenta, that can lead to delay in delivery of a baby. Additionally, it can increase risks of miscarriage and constricts fetal growth. The researchers involved in a study found that the high caffeine consumption can harm fetus as well it increases the risk of weight gain in the early stages of the child.

The study is based on the 51,000 mothers-to-be between 2002 and 2008. After 22 weeks of pregnancy, the researchers asked many questions regarding their diet including food and drinks to consider the caffeine intake. Coffee, black tea, energy drink, caffeinated soft drink, chocolate milk, chocolates, sandwich spread, cakes, ready-made sweets, and desserts are a rich source of caffeine. The researchers divided the intake into low (less than 49 mg), average (50-199), high (200-299), and very high (more than 300). Average caffeine risks at 15 percent, high caffeine risks up to 30 percent, and 66 percent risks in the case of very high caffeine mount. However, low caffeine consumer’s child was witnessed healthy growth.

After they have monitored the children’s weight, body length, and height at the 11-time point – at the age of 3, 6, 8, and 12 months and 1.5, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 8 years of age. This database was analyzed according to the weight criterion of World Health Organization. 46 percent of them were classified as low caffeine intake, 44 percent under the average intake, 7 percent under high and 3 percent under a very high category. The observed results are the evidence for advised that refraining the caffeine intake during pregnancy is the best thing for the mother and fetus, the researchers concluded.
